The other day at lunch, a friend asked me why my shirt was buttoned right up to the top button. A post by a Muslim lady about the Hijab I just came across reminded me of the question. This is the first time I’ve seen a lady who lives in the Middle East write about the Hijab and modesty, and I thought it was interesting.
I’m not Muslim and I don’t really understand the controversy which surrounds the wearing of veils, scarves etc.. Nonetheless, I probably wouldn’t choose to wear anything particularly revealing. I don’t think of not doing so as being synonymous with being modest (or trying to be modest). It’s just not something I’m comfortable with for some reason I’m not entirely sure of although repeatedly being told that I was born three centuries too late has prompted me to get rid of all my ankle length skirts.
That being said, if I was ever in a situation where I had to remove some of my clothes — for example, if I needed cloth to apply pressure to a wound after an accident — I don’t think it’d bother me very much.
